For all of my adult life, I have had a take-it-or-leave it attitude toward coffee. I enjoy it at times, other times find it upsetting to my stomach and/or too acrid for my taste. And I have gone long stretches without it.
For about 5 years prior to my trip to Ethiopia, I didn’t drink coffee. And I didn’t mind that – I like tea, and have never had a caffeine addiction. And I won’t lie – I felt superior about that. Not like some kind of achievement, more like - I dodged that bullet and how great for ME, it’s that SUPER? tra la la. Somebody smack me.
That was then.
Single mommyhood has sucker-punched me in many ways, but this one was a surprise. I still don’t drink much in the caffeine category – maybe one cup of coffee and/or a soda per day. And, unless I have company, I don’t make coffee at home…
I have, however, developed a serious weakness for a soy latte with sugar-free vanilla syrup from Peet’s – that stuff is like crack. It’s my post-rowing treat a few times a week, and since it’s almost $4, I’m trying to keep it from becoming a daily habit.
But damn it’s good.
On Monday, I was working from home, happily going about my business, when I developed a big ol’ headache around 11:00 am. Since Elsa was off with the nanny for the day, I had taken the time to eat a real breakfast, so I knew it wasn’t a blood sugar thing. And it actually took me a while to figure out that it was a caffeine thing!
Holy moley – my first caffeine headache. It wasn’t bad – just annoying. But I poured myself a diet Dr. Pepper (yum!) and soon the headache was gone, confirming its cause.
Looks like I’ve joined the teeming masses who are behold to the caffeine monkey. Tra la la.

I think my veins have caffeine instead of blood in them. Well, at least it’s better than black tar heroin, right?

Welcome to our ranks! I have been coffee’s bitch for years now and once gave it up for Lent. Everyone around me begged me to go back on it and give up being a raging maniac instead. Good times.
Peet’s is the best, isn’t it?

Welcome to the team, lady. I’ve had that monkey on my back for some time. I only drink coffee 3-4 times a week but the head aches come if any less than that.

I don’t know how I’d have ever made it through med school and residency without coffee! Never mind mommyhood. I do remember one incident in residency where an intern declined coffee served by the night shift nurse, saying he never really developed a taste for the stuff. She was all, “that’s very odd…I don’t know that I can trust a person who doesn’t like coffee!” Good for you for withstanding peer pressure all these years, but now: welcome to the dark side!

Well, you’re a little late to the game, but you can still join the team. I’ve been sucking back lattes since high school. People up here actually look at you funny if you don’t drink coffee and obviously, I wouldn’t want that!
Sadly, thanks to single mommyhood and working late nights, I’m up to well over 1/2 a pot a day (used to be 2 small cups). I guess if you’re going to have a vice, caffeine is a pretty benign one to have.
Oh, and thanks for whipping out the good stuff when I was there. Much, much appreciated!

Welcome to the club. Your friends are here. Not to worry. (Said in a sinister Vincent Price kind of voice).

OK, I’m one of those weird people who get a headache when I drink coffee (not to mention, it makes me seriously hyper, just as alcohol makes me super-sleepy). But, I love the flavor of coffee, and if I could, I’d have a bowl of really good coffee ice cream daily. Of course, I wouldn’t have any friends then! I’m amazed that you can drink Dr. Pepper. Now that’s a flavor that grosses me out.

ahhhh coffee!!! It makes me function between the hours of 5:00am and 11:00am. Without it my children would never have packed lunches, my dogs wouldn’t eat, and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t shave my legs or even wash my hair. Don’t even get me started on what teaching would be like without coffee… could you face 20 kindergarteners without caffinated backup??
Thank God Matt makes a huge pot first thing every morning

I hadn’t had coffee since Feb 1991. Until I went to Ethiopia and then I didn’t have the heart to say no to a coffee ceremony set up just for me. Thankfully they add a lot of sugar and the cups are small. Oh and popcorn settles my stomach. Anyhoo, I have had the “I’m superior as I don’t drink coffee attitude” but I have to admit I am a Peet’s chai addict. It actually has a ton of caffeine and I can only drink half of a medium (or too wired) and I save the other half for the next day so only $1.70/day for my habit. I’ve never had it with soy but maybe I will try it that way.

I learned to tolerate coffee in college. I learned to like it soon after. I was never an every day coffee drinker. I used to make coffee at home once or twice a week. Becoming a mom has turned me into a 2 cups every morning kind of person.

My addiction is the poor man’s latte… SOY MISTO! What the heck, at least we don’t smoke!
